Instagram username checker
Type a handle and find out whether it is free, already taken, or something Instagram refuses to answer. Those are three different answers and this tool keeps them apart.
The three answers, and why the third one exists
- Taken. Somebody has it. You will see who, including whether the account is private, so you can judge whether it is dormant or alive.
- Free. Instagram has no account under that name right now. It is yours to claim, and claiming it takes seconds.
- Instagram will not say. A minority of profiles return an error from Instagram's own servers rather than data. Most checkers show that as "available", which is the worst possible lie: you go to register it and find it taken. We say what actually happened.
What "free" does not guarantee
A name can be unused and still refused at signup. Instagram blocks handles that impersonate brands or public figures, and it holds back names tied to accounts that were disabled. If the checker says free and the app says no, that is why, and there is no appeal worth the effort: pick another name.
What makes a handle worth having
- Short and sayable. If someone has to spell it out loud in a caption, it is too long.
- No decorative underscores.
_x_name_x_is unfindable and unmemorable, and it reads as a throwaway. - Matches the other platforms. The same handle everywhere is worth more than the perfect handle on one.
- Not a near-copy of a big account. That is the fastest route to a report and a lost name.

Questions
Can I reserve a username without using it?
Only by creating an account with it. Instagram frees handles from deleted accounts after a while, but there is no waiting list and no way to hold a name.
Does checking notify anyone?
No. The lookup reads public data only, and nobody is told about it.
How fresh is the answer?
Results are cached for a few minutes so a burst of checks does not hammer Instagram. A name that just became free may take a moment to show as free.
